Abstract :

Common Words Between us

Paradoxically, “A Common Word Between Us and You”–the pan-Muslim call for dialogue promulgated in 2007–has generated considerable interest and response, yet has received little attention in the mainstream media. The author of the official response of The Episcopal Church to this important document will share her insights on the history of “A Common Word”, her recent experience of teaching about it at Hartford Seminary, and its implications for “Common Words Between Us”–the book she is co-authoring with a Muslim scholar-activist.

LUCINDA ALLEN MOSHER, TH.D., is a Christian ethicist who works as a consultant, author, and educator on inter-religious matters. Recent clients have included Trinity Institute, Columbia University’s Middle East Institute, the Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations Office of The Episcopal Church, the United States Institute for Peace, and Auburn Theological Seminary’s Center for Multifaith Education—for whom she is the senior researcher in an ongoing study of how US religious leaders-in-training learn about religious diversity.

Dr. Mosher is the author of Faith in the Neighborhood—a series from Seabury Books on understanding America’s many religions. She is the author of the official response of The Episcopal Church to the pan-Muslim initiative, A Common Word. She has also contributed chapters to several books and has published a number of articles on multifaith issues or Christian-Muslim concerns, and is well known for her analysis of the spiritual legacy of Turkish mystic Bediuzzaman Said Nursi. Currently, with Parvez Ahmed of the University of North Florida, she is writing a book on Christian-Muslim understanding entitled Common Words Between Us.

A frequent lecturer in the US and abroad, Dr. Mosher is the founding instructor for the annual Worldviews Seminar at The University of Michigan-Dearborn—an innovative introduction to America’s religious diversity. She has also offered courses in recent years at Hartford Seminary (CT), Fordham University (NY), St. Francis College (NY), The General Theological Seminary (NY), and New York Theological Seminary. She has been a conference coordinator, workshop speaker, or panelist in many other venues. An accomplished musician, her workshops sometimes combine her expertise in inter-religious understanding with her training in theology and the arts.
Dr. Mosher is an Episcopal Church Foundation Fellow. She holds degrees from Boston University, the University of Massachusetts (Lowell), and Hartford Seminary, and a Doctor of Theology from the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church. She maintains offices in northeast Florida and New York City.
