About Our Internship Program

American Islamic College offers a selective internship program to qualified undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates, and professionals. Interns will receive invaluable experiences and develop exceptional skills, which will benefit them as marketable applicants with distinguished resumes. Their contributions will aid the college’s advancement, as AIC intends to serve Chicago in particular, and the world in general, through offering superior coursework, a stimulating public lecture series, and constructive dialogue initiatives.

Interns will be exposed to the workings of a not-for-profit institution, and the projects that are undertaken in order to create a successful educational institution. They will receive the opportunity to creatively contribute to diverse projects and to cultivate leadership qualities. Interns will gain hands-on learning experiences in a friendly and diverse environment. While all internships are unpaid, interns will be eligible to take a free course at AIC upon completing the internship term. Students may also receive Academic Credit for such service.

General Requirements

Candidates must exhibit self-motivation, reliability, and resourcefulness. Candidates must be highly organized, punctual, and maintain consistency in their work ethic. Candidates must have the ability to work well with others in a team setting, as well as the ability to work alone on an assigned project. Candidates must have a working knowledge of basic computer functions, such as Excel, Word, ppt, etc. Candidates must be familiar with common social media outlets and basic internet browsing, in order to perform research when necessary. Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and they are sometimes expected to attend AIC events. Candidates are required to bring their laptops. Additional qualifications may be required depending on the internship of interest.

Communications Department


Intern will maintain the e-publication through writing and editing articles. The publication will be posted on the AIC website and distributed via email biweekly. This will include AIC and community news, as well as articles focusing on a particular theme. Intern must possess excellent written skills and have some background in research and editing; this can include a class or volunteer/work experience. Intern must have the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Applicant must submit a 500-word writing sample on a topic related to Islam and Muslims in America.

Intern will write for the AIC website and newsletter, reporting on AIC events, activities, courses, and student and public testimonials. This requires the intern to be present at several AIC scheduled events and activities. Articles must be edited and prepared for final submission immediately after the event in order to be published online at the start of the following business day. Intern must possess excellent written and verbal skills. Intern must be punctual and organized in order to keep up with the fast-paced work environment at AIC. Applicant must submit a 350-word writing sample on an event attended at AIC.

Marketing

Intern will use existing methods and help strategize new ones to publicize events to a wide network. Applicant should have some background in marketing; this can include a class or volunteer/work experience. Intern must demonstrate a working knowledge of social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. Intern is also responsible for conducting research, which will be useful for marketing purposes.

Have or be pursuing a degree related to Marketing, Business, Advertising, or Communications
Demonstrate strong written and verbal skills

Multimedia Department

Graphic and Web design

Intern will help create graphics for AIC advertising, maintain and update the AIC website. Intern must work with Marketing personnel to maintain social media websites. Applicant must be competent in graphic design (Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign) and web design (HTML, CSS, WordPress and social media marketing). Applicant must include an electronic portfolio or link to an online website that contains graphic work and a website sample.

Have or be pursuing a degree related to Graphic design, Web design, Art, Communications, Computer Science, or IT
Be a quick and efficient learner and producer
Be creative and innovative
Manage multiple projects at one time

 

Photography and Video production

Intern will take photos or videos of AIC events for website and advertising purposes. Applicant should be competent in Video production (Digital Camcorders; Video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, etc; Ustream; Youtube & Vimeo), as well as in Photography (DSLR camera and Photoshop). Applicant must include an electronic portfolio that includes photographs and/or prepared videos.

Desired Qualifications


Have or be pursuing a degree related to Photography, Video Production, Design, Art, Communications, Photo Journalism, Journalism, or Advertising
Knowledge of Sound, Editing, Software, etc.
Manage multiple projects at one time

Operations Department


Intern will help with scheduling tours and meeting with prospective students. Intern will give tours of the AIC facilities. Intern will also attend to daily office duties and complete management tasks. Intern will assist in programs & networking events to help advertise AIC. Intern will also report to the Dormitory Supervisor for any assigned dormitory issues. For this position, the intern needs to have a strong work ethic, demonstrate problem solving skills, be personable and easy to work with, take initiative, be reliable and resourceful. Intern needs to have general qualifications, such as basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Intern will help with research projects as needed; this includes, but is not limited to, grant research. Applicant must have some research background; this can include a class or volunteer/work experience.

Intern will design and maintain key databases to fit the needs of the organization. Intern must be proficient in Excel and have some background in database management; this can include a class or volunteer/work experience.

Intern will help promote the Make-A-Gift program as well as strategize and implement ways to raise funds for the organization. Applicant must be organized and possess strong interpersonal and verbal skills.

Have or be pursuing a degree related to Non-Profit Management, Administrative Affairs, Grant writing, Education, or Business

LIBRARY

Intern will assist the Librarian in major projects involved in developing an academic library. Intern must be a fast learner. Intern will work with OCLC and World Cat; classify; shelve; and establish bar codes.

Desired Qualifications


Have or be pursuing a degree in Library Sciences, or a related field
Must be familiar with classifications systems; OCLC, and other major networks
Helpful if you know more than one language, preferably Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, or Persian
Exposure to the workings of a library
Love of books and an interest in a start-up academic library

 

Outreach Department

Public Relations

Intern will outreach to and develop relations with several key organizations around the city of Chicago. Intern will research and network with important media outlets: radio, television, newspaper, etc. Intern will work with Communications Director in sending press releases and handling media inquiries. Intern will attend AIC events and AIC co-sponsored events to network and advertise AIC. Intern will also assist the Communications department in reaching out to university and college campuses to share information on AIC. Applicant must be organized and possess strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities.

Desired Qualifications


Have or be pursuing a degree related to PR and Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Sociology, Anthropology, History, International Relations
Have strong verbal and written skills

Human Resources

Intern will help promote and maintain the internship/volunteer program. This includes visiting various college campuses and venues to promote the AIC internship and volunteer programs, and posting opportunities on various websites and online social networks. Applicant must be organized and possess strong interpersonal and verbal skills.

Event Planning Assistant

Intern will assist in planning and implementing a multitude of events; this includes lecture programs, community service projects, interfaith and cultural events, symposiums and conferences.

Have or be pursuing a degree related to International Relations, Theology, Anthropology, Sociology, Event Planning, Non-Profit Management
Excellent Research skills
Strong interpersonal proficiencies

Volunteer Assistantship

About our Volunteer Assistantship Program


American Islamic College offers a selective volunteer assistantship program to qualified high school students interested in fields related to Non-profit management, International Relations, Sociology & Anthropology, Journalism, Event Planning, and Education.

Volunteers may satisfy their high school graduation requirement by volunteering at American Islamic College in the following departments:
Communications
Multi-Media
Operations
Outreach

Volunteers will be exposed to the workings of a not-for-profit institution, and the projects that are undertaken by a successful educational institution. Volunteers will gain practical experience that will shape their future plans in the career world and/or give them necessary insight into suitable degree programs for their areas of interest.

General Requirements


Volunteers must be self-motivated, hard working, and organized. Volunteers must have the ability to work well with others in a team setting, as well as the ability to work alone on an assigned project. Volunteers must have a working knowledge with basic computer functions, such as excel, word, ppt, etc. Volunteers must be familiar with common social media outlets, and basic internet browsing, in order to perform research when necessary. Volunteers must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Projects must be completed in a timely manner. Volunteers are required to bring their laptops. Volunteers are expected to participate at AIC events. Additional qualifications may be required depending on the department of interest.

*Volunteers must commit to 7-9 hrs a week and are expected to assist at AIC events. A certificate of completion will be issued at the end of the term.

Assistantship Opportunities

Communications Department

Research Assistant Volunteer will research diverse media outlets and study efficient ways to utilize them. Volunteer will also research important news headlines to gauge community and global interest in order to develop topics for lectures, courses, and conferences. Volunteer will work closely with the Marketing and Journalism staff.

Reporting Assistant Volunteer will assist Journalism interns and staff in producing well written reports on AIC events, as well as co-sponsored events and activities.

Multimedia Department

Multi-media Assistant
Volunteer will assist with setting up sound and video production at AIC events. Volunteer will also assist with setting up the Power Point projector, microphones, and work with other technologies that will make for smooth programming.

Photography Assistant
Volunteer will assist with taking professional photographs at AIC events. Volunteer will work with Photoshop and other programs to create a strong presentation of AIC programs on the website.

Operations Department


Administrative Assistant
Volunteer will assist the intern and staff with daily office duties. Volunteer must be very organized and maintain a consistent and strong work ethic. Volunteer must have the ability to work on more than one project at one time. Volunteers must assist in record keeping, advertising, and research. Assistant will participate in programs and networking events to help advertise AIC. For this position, the volunteer should demonstrate problem solving skills, be personable and easy to work with, take initiative, be reliable and resourceful. Intern needs to have general qualifications, such as basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Database Management
