Position: Arabic Language Coordinator

American Islamic College in Chicago is opening a new full-time Arabic Language Teaching position with administrative responsibilities associated with the launching and development of an Arabic Language Institute in the summer of 2018. The advertised position will provide a qualified educator with the opportunity to help lay the foundation of the Institute.

Qualifications: Candidates must have completed at least a Masters Degree in Arabic Language (TASL/TAFL) or a related field at the time of application, and preferably possess a doctorate in a relevant area of study. Qualified applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong background in language teaching pedagogy as well as near-native proficiency (or its equivalent) in speaking, reading, and writing the Arabic language. Evidence of at least three years’ Arabic teaching experience in American university settings is highly desired. Candidates must have exceptional English language proficiency since translation—rather than conversation—constitutes a key learning outcome at all proficiency levels in Arabic at AIC. Candidates will ideally have a strong basis in primary Islamic religious texts and a proven ability to integrate such materials into their language teaching. Candidates with training in the rules of Quranic recitation (tajwid) are especially encouraged to apply.  Experience with program design, management and staff supervision is highly desirable. US citizenship or Green Card is required.

Job description: In addition to teaching beginning, intermediate and/or advanced Arabic courses, the Arabic Language Coordinator must also take the lead in the design and refinement of Arabic course syllabi and assume responsibility for the supervision and training of other Arabic instructors as needed. The administrative role of the Arabic Language Coordinator includes course scheduling, proficiency testing of new students, preparation of promotional materials, and maintenance of language transfer equivalency records for students from other universities.

Salary: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The initial hire will be for a renewable three-year contract.
