About Our Internship Program
The American Islamic College offers a selective internship program to qualified undergraduate and graduate students, as well as, recent graduates, and professionals. Interns will receive invaluable experiences and develop exceptional skills, which will benefit them as marketable applicants with distinguished resumes. Their contributions will aide the college’s advancement instrumentally, as the AIC intends on serving Chicago in particular, and the world in general, with superior coursework, insightful lecture series, and constructive dialogue initiatives.
Interns will be exposed to the workings of a not-for-profit institution, and the projects that are undergone to create for a successful educational institution. They will receive the opportunity to be innovative and to cultivate leadership qualities. Interns will gain hands-on learning experiences in a friendly and diverse environment. All internships are unpaid. Interns are eligible to take a Free course at the AIC upon completing the internship term. Students may receive Academic Credit.
Candidates must exhibit self-motivation, reliability, and resourcefulness. Candidates must be highly organized, punctual, and maintain consistency in their work ethic. Candidates must have the ability to work well with others in a team setting, as well as, the ability to work alone on an assigned project. Candidates must have a working knowledge with basic computer functions, such as excel, word, ppt, etc. Candidates must be familiar with common social media outlets, and basic internet browsing, in order to perform research when necessary. Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Candidates are expected to attend AIC events. Candidates are required to bring their laptops. Additional qualifications may be required depending on the internship of interest.

C O M M U N I C A T I O N S D E P A R T M E N T
AIC E-Publication: Intern will maintain the e-publication by writing, editing, and articles. The publication will be posted on the AIC website and sent via email biweekly, and will include AIC and community news, as well as articles focusing on a particular theme. Intern must possess excellent written skills and have some background in research and editing; this can include a class or volunteer/work experience. Intern must have the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Applicant must submit a 500-word writing sample on a topic related to Islam and Muslims in America.
Journalism: Intern will write for the AIC website and newsletter, reporting on AIC events, activities, courses, and student & public testimonials. This requires the intern to be present at all AIC scheduled events and activities. Articles must be edited and prepared for final submission immediately after the event in order to publish it online at the start of the following business day. Intern must possess excellent written and verbal skills. Intern must be timely and organized in order to keep up with the fast-paced work environment at AIC. Applicant must submit a 350-word writing sample on an event attended at AIC.

Marketing: Intern will use existing methods and help strategize new ones to publicize events to a wide network. Applicant should have some background in marketing; this can include a class or volunteer/work experience. Intern must demonstrate a working knowledge of social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc. Intern is also responsible for conducting research, which will be useful for marketing purposes.

M U L T I M E D I A D E P A R T M E N T
Graphic and Web design: Intern will help create graphics for AIC advertising, maintain and update AIC website. Intern must work with Marketing personnel to maintain social media websites. Applicant must be competent in Graphic design (Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign) and Web design (HTML, CSS, WordPress & social media marketing). Applicant must include an electronic portfolio or link to online website that contains graphic work & example website.
- Have or are pursuing a degree related to Graphic design, Web design, Art, Communications, Computer Science, or IT

Photography and Video production: Intern will take photos or videos of AIC events for website and advertising purposes. Applicant should be competent in Video production (Digital Camcorders; Video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, etc; Ustream; Youtube & Vimeo), as well as in Photography (DSLR camera and Photoshop). Applicant must include an electronic portfolio that includes photographs and/or prepared videos.

O P E R A T I O N S D E P A R T M E N T
Administrative Assistant: Intern will help with scheduling tours and meeting with prospective students. Intern will give tours of the AIC facilities. Intern will also attend to daily office duties and complete management tasks. Intern will assist in programs & networking events to help advertise AIC. Intern will also report to the Dormitory Supervisor for any assigned dormitory issues. For this position, the intern needs to have a strong work ethic, demonstrate problem solving skills, be personable and easy to work with, take initiative, be reliable, and resourceful. Intern needs to have general qualifications, such as basic knowledge of Microsoft office.
Research Assistant: Intern will help with research projects as needed; this includes, but is not limited to, grant research. Applicant must have some research background; this can include a class or volunteer/work experience.
Database Management: Intern will design and maintain key databases to fit the needs of the organization. Intern must be proficient in excel and have some background in database management; this can include a class or volunteer/work experience.
Fundraising: Intern will help promote the Make-A-Gift program as well as strategize and implement ways to raise funds for the organization. Applicant must be organized and possess strong interpersonal and verbal skills.

Library: Intern will assist the Librarian in major projects involved in developing an academic library. Intern must be a fast learner. Intern will work with OCLC and World Cat; classify; shelve; and establish bar codes.
- Have or are pursuing a degree in Library Sciences, or a related field
- Must be familiar with classifications systems; OCLC, & other major networks
- Helpful if you know more than one language, preferably Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, or Persian
- Exposure to the workings of a library
- Love of books and an interest in a start-up academic library
O U T R E A C H D E P A R T M E N T
Public Relations: Intern will outreach to and develop relations with several key organizations around the city of Chicago. Intern will research and network with important media outlets: radio, tv, newspaper, etc. Intern will work with Communications director in sending Press Releases and handling media inquiries. Intern will attend AIC events and AIC co-sponsored events to network and advertise AIC. Intern will also assist the Communications department in reaching out to university & college campuses to share information on AIC. Applicant must be organized and possess strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities.

Human Resources: Intern will help promote and maintain the internship/volunteer program. This includes visiting various college campuses and venues to promote the AIC internship and volunteer programs, and posting opportunities on various websites and online social networks. Applicant must be organized and possess strong interpersonal and verbal skills.

Event Planning Assistant: Intern will assist in planning and implementing a multitude of events; this includes lecture programs, community service projects, interfaith and cultural events, symposiums and conferences.
